Uses and Purpose of Stainless Steel 317 Plates
The 317 grades of stainless steel were designed as a stronger alternative to the 316 grades. As it contains more chromium, nickel, and molybdenum than Type 316, SS 317 is also more resistant to corrosion and more durable than Type 304. This is a result of the composition's high iron content, which is significantly higher than that of many stainless steels. A robust alloy is produced when iron and chromium, nickel, and molybdenum are combined.
Work capabilities include all common welding methods, hot working methods, and cold working methods. 317 demonstrates good versatility. It will only harden under cold working, which will also increase its strength. When heat treating this metal, temperatures should not drop below 1700°F as this is the threshold for response.
Its strength and corrosion resistance makes stainless steel 317 plates a common material in the textile industry. Other applications include the manufacturing of chemical equipment and the machines used in the pulping paper.
Stainless Steel 317L is a low-carbon version of SS 317. The metal maintains its high strength and strong corrosion resistance; however, the carbon content does have several effects. 317L (UNS S31700) has greater strength under welding; its products are stronger.
317L, like stainless steel 317 plates, does not respond to heat treatments or hardening. When hot working, the metal should preferably be heated to a temperature between 2100 and 2300°F. The metal will become inactive when temperatures fall below 1700°F. In high-temperature locations with high rates of chemical corrosion, creep, and stress-to-rupture, 317L is beneficial for these reasons.
In chemical conditions, 317 (UNS S31700) is frequently used. In environments with acids, such as those with acidic chloride, it has proven to be useful. Corrosion caused by these compounds won't affect the metal. Therefore, it is typical to find 317 in machinery used in pulp and paper mills.
How to choose stainless steel 317 plates?
Stainless steel is one of the biggest components and material used for various applications, industries and projects due to its weldability, durability, flexibility and corrosion resistance. And it is very crucial to choose the right preferable needs for the application.
To help you understand and choose the right 317 stainless steel plate, you have to consider the following points:
Corrosion Resistance
Stainless Steel 317 plates are highly corrosion resistant even in difficult environments that include a wide range of chemicals, especially in acidic chloride environments. It is also an excellent resistance in applications wherein it can be prone to contamination.
Heat Resistance
All chromium-nickel-molybdenum steels have outstanding oxidation resistance. shows a low scaling rate at temperatures up to 1600-1650°F (871-899°C) in typical atmospheres.
Welding Characteristics
AWS E317L/ER317L filler metal or austenitic, low carbon filler metals with molybdenum content higher than that of Type 317, or a nickel-base filler metal with sufficient chromium and molybdenum content to exceed the corrosion resistance of Type 317, is used to weld Type 317 steel.
Machinability
The tendency of this alloy to work harder is minimized by low speeds and steady feeds. Chip breakers are used since these materials are tougher than 304 stainless steel plates and have lengthy, stringy chips.
